MDF is an engineered wood-based panel produced from refined wood fibres bonded under heat and pressure, which gives it a homogeneous cross-section and faces without grain direction or knots. The practical consequence is that the board machines cleanly on all edges, takes a routed profile without tear-out, and presents a flat, uniform surface suitable for painting or laminating. At 18 mm the panel is in the usual structural thickness band for shelving, cabinet carcasses, worktop substrates and jig baseboards. The 2440 x 1220 mm sheet is the common cutting size, so it drops directly into standard panel-saw and CNC nesting layouts with minimal offcut. Typical applications
An 18 mm full sheet is the working thickness for load-bearing panel work: shelving and racking decks, cabinet and locker carcasses, bench and worktop substrates, packing-case and crate panels, and shop-floor jigs, templates and routing fixtures. Because MDF has no grain direction, the same sheet can be cut in either orientation without changing the machined edge quality, which is useful where a set of parts is nested from one board.
