Description
A gearbox is a type of gear train that is used to change the speed and torque characteristics of a motor. When gearboxes drop speed, the torque (turning force) at the output increases. They reduce torque as they gain speed.
Speed reducers are a common word for gearboxes that reduce the speed of an electric motor while increasing torque. Because practically every gearbox application includes reducing speed and increasing torque, both terms are frequently used interchangeably. However, speed reducers are a subclass of gearboxes, and a gearbox can be used to enhance output speed at the expense of torque.
