The connector is only half the interface. Backshells, banding platforms, strain-relief clamps and EMI/EMC accessories decide whether a harness survives vibration, shock, moisture and electromagnetic interference in service. This guide explains how to specify them correctly — and how to turn a part number into a structured quotation.
A backshell terminates the rear of a connector. It manages the cable bundle, anchors the shield, relieves mechanical strain on the contacts and — in screened assemblies — completes the path that carries interference to ground. Choosing the wrong backshell is one of the most common reasons a correctly specified connector still fails qualification: the contacts may be perfect, but the termination leaks EMI, fatigues under vibration, or admits moisture at the cable entry.
For defence, aviation/aerospace, marine and industrial MRO buyers, accessory selection is rarely a free choice. It is constrained by the connector series, the shell size, the cable outer diameter, the screening architecture and the environmental class the assembly has to meet. Backshell geometry: straight, 45° and 90°
The cable exit angle is usually the first decision because it is driven by the installation envelope, not by preference. The geometry you select changes the bend radius the cable sees, the clearance behind the connector and how the bundle is routed away from the interface.
Straight
Cable exits in line with the connector axis. Lowest profile along the axis, simplest to terminate, preferred where there is room behind the connector and the harness runs away cleanly.
45°
A compromise exit angle used where a straight run is impractical but a full right-angle turn would over-bend the cable or crowd an adjacent connector.
90°
Cable exits at a right angle. Essential in tight bays and against bulkheads, but it constrains the minimum bend radius and must be clocked so the exit points the correct way.
Angled backshells are frequently clockable or supplied in fixed orientations. When the exit direction is critical, the orientation requirement belongs in the RFQ alongside the part number, because two otherwise identical 90° backshells can route the bundle in opposite directions.
Environmental and shielded backshells
Beyond geometry, backshells are categorised by what they have to do at the cable entry:
Environmental (sealed) backshells
These add sealing at the cable entry — typically through a grommet or potting provision — to resist moisture, fluids and contamination. They suit marine, external airframe and exposed industrial routes where ingress would otherwise track into the connector. Sealing performance depends on matching the entry to the actual cable diameter; an oversized entry seals poorly.
Shielded / EMI backshells
Screened backshells provide a continuous, low-impedance path from the cable shield to the connector shell and onward to chassis ground. They are the workhorse of EMI/EMC termination and are specified by how the shield is captured — by a banding platform, an integral saddle clamp, a conductive grommet or a knurled ring. The screening method, not just the part number, determines real-world EMC performance.
Non-environmental backshells
Used in benign internal environments where mechanical management and strain relief are needed but full sealing is not. They are lighter and lower cost, but should not be substituted into a sealed or screened position without confirming the requirement.
Strain relief and EMI/EMC shield termination
Two jobs often share one accessory, and confusing them causes field failures.
Strain relief
Mechanically anchors the cable jacket so vibration, flexing and pull loads are reacted by the backshell — not by the crimped contacts. Without it, conductors fatigue at the contact rear and intermittent or open circuits appear over time. Relief is delivered by saddle clamps, cable-grip bushings or heat-shrink boot adapters.
EMI/EMC shield termination
Electrically bonds the cable braid to the connector shell with as little impedance as possible. The bond must be continuous around the full circumference; a partial or single-point connection leaves a gap that radiates and admits interference. 360° termination is the objective wherever screening matters.
Banding platform vs saddle clamp
The two dominant ways to terminate a braid onto a backshell behave very differently. The right choice depends on the environment, the screening target, mass and serviceability constraints, and whether banding tooling is available at the build location.

Both are valid. The decision is an engineering one tied to the platform requirement — and to whether the relevant tooling and consumables (banding straps, grommets, boots) are part of the same RFQ so the build is not held up by a missing accessory.
Accessory selection against series and shell size
An accessory is only correct if it matches the connector it mounts to. Backshells, clamps and adapters are dimensioned to a specific connector series and shell-size range; a near-match will not thread, seal or clock correctly. The factors below should travel with every backshell or accessory request.

Let the installation envelope decide. Use a straight backshell when there is clearance behind the connector and the harness runs away in line. Use 45° or 90° when the cable must turn to clear an adjacent connector or a bulkhead. What is the difference between strain relief and shield termination?

A saddle clamp is simpler to fit and re-open, which suits field-serviceable harnesses and less demanding environments. Both are valid; the choice follows the engineering requirement and tooling on hand.
Why does the backshell have to match the connector series and shell size?
Backshells are dimensioned to a specific connector series and shell-size range, including the rear thread or coupling, the entry size and how the part clocks. A near-match will not thread, seal or orient correctly. Always source the accessory against the connector part number rather than by appearance.
Do I need an environmental (sealed) backshell?
If the cable entry is exposed to moisture, fluids or contamination — marine, external airframe or exposed industrial routes — an environmental backshell with appropriate sealing is usually required, and the seal must match the actual cable diameter. In benign internal environments a non-environmental backshell may be sufficient. Confirm the environmental class on the RFQ.
