About the ISO 10511 NUT M4 STEEL PREVAILING
This item is a hexagon thin nut manufactured to ISO 10511, the international standard for prevailing-torque type hexagon thin nuts with a non-metallic insert. A polymer ring captive in the top of the nut deforms around the bolt thread as the nut is run down, generating a prevailing torque that resists self-loosening under vibration without any additional locking device — the familiar ‘nyloc’ locking principle in a reduced-height body. The M4 size uses the standard metric coarse thread of 0.7 mm pitch with a 7 mm width across flats. The thin (low-profile) style suits joints with limited axial space or applications where a lock nut is run against another nut. The nut is steel, as designated. Because the insert is non-metallic, standard practice limits service temperature to the insert material’s capability, and reuse is restricted since locking torque falls with each application.
