Description

SCREW; M6x30/12.9, ISO 4762 STEEL — BOLTON SKU 57236.

About the ISO 4762 Screw M6 x 30

ISO 4762 specifies hexagon socket head cap screws with coarse-pitch threads from M1.6 to M64 in product grade A — the standard that superseded the widely used DIN 912 catalogue entry. For the M6 size the thread pitch is 1.0 mm, the head diameter is 10.0 mm maximum, the head height is 6.0 mm maximum and the hexagon socket is 5 mm across flats; this item is the 30 mm nominal length. The 12.9 field is the steel property class: the highest class in the standard range, corresponding to a nominal tensile strength of 1200 MPa, and the class for which ISO 4762 calls out the 5g6g thread tolerance rather than the general 6g. Class 12.9 screws are alloy steel, heat treated, and are chosen where the joint depends on high clamp load in a small envelope. They are correspondingly notch-sensitive and are normally torqued to a defined figure rather than by feel.

Key specifications

Attribute Value
Standard ISO 4762 (hexagon socket head cap screw, product grade A)
Thread M6 × 1.0 coarse
Nominal length 30 mm
Property class 12.9 steel (1200 MPa nominal tensile strength)
Head diameter (dk max) 10.0 mm
Head height (k max) 6.0 mm
Hexagon socket 5 mm across flats
Thread tolerance for class 12.9 5g6g

Typical applications

High-tensile socket head cap screws are used where a compact, highly loaded joint is required: machine and jig construction, mounting plates and brackets carrying dynamic load, drive and linkage components, tooling and fixtures, and equipment rebuild work in MRO workshops. The cylindrical head allows counterboring so the screw sits flush or below the surface. Surface finish and any plating should be confirmed at quotation, as coating choice affects both corrosion behaviour and the torque-tension relationship of a class 12.9 fastener.
