The description resolves to an aluminium blind rivet with a domed head, 3.2 mm nominal body diameter and 8 mm length. Blind rivets are set entirely from one side of the joint, which is why they are specified wherever the reverse face cannot be reached: a rivet tool grips and pulls the mandrel, the rivet body upsets behind the workpiece to form the blind-side head, and the mandrel then breaks off at a designed point. A domed head presents a rounded profile on the accessible face with a bearing area larger than the hole, spreading load into the sheet. Aluminium bodies are light and corrosion resistant, and give a clean finished appearance on assemblies. Because the joint is formed by the tool rather than by torque, blind rivets avoid the overtightening and thread-stripping failure modes of screwed fasteners.
