About the Perma-Grit SB280 Sanding Block, 280 x 50

The Perma-Grit SB280 is a large double-sided abrading block. Rather than paper-backed abrasive, it uses tungsten carbide grit bonded to steel sheets, which are in turn bonded with industrial double-sided tape to a custom anodised aluminium extrusion. One face carries the coarse grade and the opposite face the fine grade, so the same tool covers stock removal and finishing. The manufacturer’s published grades are UK 180 / US 60 coarse and UK 320 / US 120 fine, on a block of approximately 280 × 52 × 41 mm. Because the abrasive is carbide on steel rather than a coated paper, the faces do not clog or tear in the way abrasive sheet does, and the extrusion is described as light, clean and resistant to warping. The square section allows the block to be used on its side to sand square to a surface. Perma-Grit state the tools cut wood, glass fibre, carbon fibre, Kevlar, acrylics and plastics, and non-ferrous metals including brass, copper and aluminium, as well as ceramics.

Blocks of this type are used in composite and model workshops for profiling leading and trailing edges, block-sanding filler, squaring off machined or laminated stock and dressing carbon-fibre and glass-fibre laminates. They are common in MRO and prototype shops where laminate edges have to be trimmed by hand. Appropriate respiratory and eye protection should be used when abrading composite materials.
