About the ISO 7089 Flat Washer M6 A4
ISO 7089 specifies the normal-series plain washer in product grade A, the flat washer used under the majority of metric bolt heads and nuts. In the M6 size the washer has a 6.4 mm inside diameter, a 12 mm outside diameter and a nominal thickness of 1.6 mm. Its function in the joint is straightforward: it provides a clean, flat, parallel bearing face so that clamp load is transferred evenly, it protects the assembled surface from being scored as the fastener is turned, and it slightly increases the effective bearing diameter under the head. This item is produced in A4 austenitic stainless steel, the molybdenum-bearing grade of the ISO 3506 stainless range. Pairing an A4 washer with an A4 screw keeps the whole joint within one material family and avoids the dissimilar-metal couple that arises when a stainless fastener is bedded onto a plated carbon steel washer.

Typical applications
This washer is the default companion to an M6 stainless screw or nut in general mechanical assembly, covering panel and bracket fixing, enclosure hardware, frame and rail bolting, and equipment mounting. Because it is the normal rather than the large series, it suits bearing surfaces that are already sound metal and need no additional load spreading. The A4 grade makes it appropriate for coastal, marine and washdown installations, and for any joint where A4 fasteners are already specified.
