Description

Hex Nylock Nut M3, A2 Stainless Steel, DIN 985 — BOLTON SKU 60988.

About the Hex Nylock Nut M3 A2 Stainless

DIN 985 covers the prevailing-torque hexagon nut with a non-metallic insert, the fastener commonly called a Nyloc or nylock nut; the current equivalent standard is DIN EN ISO 10511. The locking action comes from an unthreaded polymer collar in the top of the nut: the male thread cuts its own path through the collar as the nut is run on, and the resulting grip on the thread flanks holds the nut against loosening even when the joint is not clamped tight. This item is M3 with a 0.5 mm pitch, in A2 stainless steel, with a 5.5 mm width across flats. Because the locking feature is a polymer, its service temperature is limited compared with an all-metal locknut, and repeated removal and refitting progressively reduces the prevailing torque — practice on maintained assemblies is to fit a new nut on reassembly rather than reuse the old one.

Key specifications

Standard DIN 985 (equivalent DIN EN ISO 10511)
Thread M3, 0.5 mm pitch
Width across flats 5.5 mm nominal
Material A2 austenitic stainless steel
Locking feature Non-metallic (nylon) insert, prevailing torque

Typical applications

An M3 nylock is used where a small fastener sits in a vibrating or cyclically loaded assembly and cannot be relied on to stay tight by clamp load alone — sensor and antenna mounts, small linkages, airframe and enclosure internals, and instrument panels. It is also the usual choice on pivoting joints, where the nut must be left slightly slack so the parts can move but must not back off. The 5.5 mm hexagon is turned with a standard 5.5 mm socket or spanner.
