About the 96990A161 Drill Bushing, 3 mm ID
The 96990A161 press-fit drill bushing is the small-bore member of this metric family: a 3 mm inside diameter, 6 mm outside diameter and 16 mm overall length, with a chamfer on one end. Headless press-fit bushings are pressed straight into a reamed hole in the jig plate rather than seating on a shoulder, leaving the plate face clear; the chamfered end provides the lead-in during installation. McMaster-Carr specifies bushings of this family in hardened and ground steel so the bore resists the abrasion of repeated drill passes and holds its size across many cycles. Note the thin annular wall here — 1.5 mm between bore and outside diameter — which is why the press fit into a correctly sized and prepared hole matters more on the small sizes than on the larger ones.

Typical applications
The 3 mm bore guides 3 mm drills, the size used for M4 clearance and for small pilot, rivet and pin holes in sheet and light plate. Small-diameter drills are the most prone to deflection and breakage, so a guide bushing of this size does the most to protect hole position and drill life. The compact 6 mm outside diameter lets several bushings be set close together in one jig plate where a hole pattern is tightly spaced.
