About the ISO 10511 M5-A4 Prevailing Torque Type
ISO 10511 covers prevailing-torque hexagon thin nuts with a non-metallic insert in metric coarse threads, in steel and in stainless grades A2 and A4. In this M5 size the nut takes an M5 × 0.8 coarse thread to 6H tolerance, measures 8 mm across the flats and stands 3.2 mm high, so it adds very little height above the joint face compared with a standard hexagon nut. Locking is achieved by the polymer insert crimped into the top of the nut: the male thread cuts into the insert as it is driven through, and the friction that results resists loosening under vibration without relying on a fixed clamp load. The material is A4 austenitic stainless steel, the molybdenum-bearing grade of ISO 3506-2, which is specified where chlorides are present. Note that thin nuts of this style carry reduced loadability and are not intended to develop full resistance to thread stripping.

Typical applications
