About the ISO 10511 M6-A4 Prevailing Torque Type
ISO 10511 defines prevailing-torque hexagon thin nuts with a non-metallic insert in metric coarse threads and in steel or A2 / A4 stainless. This M6 variant is threaded M6 × 1 to 6H tolerance, takes a 10 mm spanner across the flats and stands 4 mm high overall. The prevailing-torque action comes from the polymer collar seated in the crown of the nut: the bolt thread forms its own path through the collar, and the resulting interference produces a resistance to rotation that is present whether or not the joint is fully torqued, which is what makes the nut resistant to vibration-induced loosening. A4 stainless steel is the molybdenum-bearing austenitic grade of ISO 3506-2 and is the usual choice for marine and chloride-rich environments. As a style-0 thin nut it has reduced loadability and is not designed to give full thread-stripping resistance, so it should not be substituted for a full-height nut in a highly loaded joint.
