Description
ISO 10511 M8-A4 Prevailing Torque Type Nut — BOLTON SKU 56932.
About the ISO 10511 M8-A4 Prevailing Torque Type
ISO 10511 specifies prevailing-torque hexagon thin nuts with a non-metallic insert in metric coarse threads, in steel and in A2 or A4 stainless. The M8 size in this listing carries an M8 × 1.25 coarse thread to 6H tolerance, is 13 mm across the flats and 5.5 mm high overall. Its locking element is a polymer insert set into the crown of the nut; the bolt cuts its thread form into the insert during assembly, and the interference between the two produces a prevailing torque that has to be overcome every turn, on and off. That behaviour keeps the nut in place when a joint relaxes or when vibration would otherwise back off a plain nut. The A4 grade of ISO 3506-2 is the molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless normally chosen for chloride exposure. Being a style-0 thin nut, it has reduced loadability compared with a standard-height nut and is not designed to give full thread-stripping resistance.

Typical applications
At M8 the fastener moves into equipment and frame work, and the iso10511 m8-a4 nut prevailing torque type appears on pump and motor ancillary mounts, handrail and ladder fittings, deck and roof-mounted plant, gate and shutter hardware, and machine guarding subject to constant vibration. The 5.5 mm nut height helps where a locking nut has to fit under a cover or inside a shallow recess that a full-height M8 nyloc would not clear. With A4 material the nut is suited to outdoor, coastal and washdown installations. Keep it to light and moderate clamping duties, and use a full-height nut where thread-stripping margin is part of the design case.
