The STP15N80K5 N-channel MOSFET is an STMicroelectronics very-high-voltage power MOSFET built on the MDmesh K5 process, rated at 800 V drain-source voltage with a 14 A drain current rating and a typical on-resistance of approximately 0.30 Ω. It is supplied in the through-hole TO-220 package. ST describes MDmesh K5 as a proprietary vertical superjunction structure that reduces on-resistance and gate charge together, which is the combination designers look for when both conduction and switching losses have to come down at once. The 800 V class is selected for off-line converters working from rectified mains, where the switch must stand off the peak bus voltage plus switching overshoot with margin. TO-220 suits designs that bolt the device to a heatsink or chassis rather than relying on board copper for heat spreading.
