About the 209-6659 Stainless External Circlip, 16mm Shaft
The 209-6659 external circlip is an RS PRO stainless steel retaining ring for a 16 mm shaft, seating in a 15.2 mm groove diameter with a ring thickness of 1 mm. An external circlip is sprung open with circlip pliers, passed over the end of the shaft and released into a machined groove, where it forms a shoulder that locates bearings, gears, pulleys or bushes axially — without any threaded fastener, weld or additional machined feature. Because the ring rides in a groove rather than clamping the component, it holds the part in position while leaving it free to rotate on the shaft. The stainless steel material is specified where the assembly sees moisture, washdown or outdoor exposure and a plated carbon steel ring would corrode into its groove. Circlips are consumable items: a ring over-opened during removal should be replaced rather than refitted.
