About the Mitutoyo 570-248 Height Gauge, 0-40
The 570-248 digimatic height gauge is a Series 570 ABSOLUTE Digimatic instrument with a measuring range of 0 to 1000 mm, equivalent to 0 to 40 inches. It uses a built-in ABSOLUTE linear encoder, so the instrument retains its origin and does not need the reference point to be re-established each time it is switched on. Display resolution is 0.01 mm, or 0.0005 in when working in imperial, on a six-digit LCD. Within the Series 570 range this model is the dual inch and millimetre version, distinguishing it from the metric-only 570-230. A fine-adjustment mechanism is provided for precise positioning of the slider against the work, and the gauge is supplied with a carbide-tipped scriber. SPC data output allows readings to be sent directly to a data collection system rather than transcribed by hand. The instrument runs from an SR44 battery with an expected life of approximately 5,000 hours in normal use.

Typical applications
A 1000 mm range height gauge is a surface-plate instrument for larger fabricated and machined parts — checking hole centres, step heights, flange and boss positions on assemblies too tall for a 300 or 600 mm gauge. The ABSOLUTE encoder suits inspection routines where the instrument is switched on and off repeatedly through a shift, and the SPC output supports recorded first-article and in-process inspection. The carbide scriber allows the same instrument to be used for marking out as well as measurement.
