About the Silica Gel Blue Indicating Type 2-5
Blue indicating silica gel is an amorphous silica desiccant impregnated with cobalt chloride, which acts as a visual moisture indicator. The listing reference selica gel blue 2-5mm indicatve corresponds to the spherical bead grade in the 2 to 5 mm size range, supplied in 25 kg drums. Anhydrous cobalt chloride is deep blue; as the bed takes up water the beads pass through light blue and turn pink, with the change becoming clearly visible at around 8 % moisture by weight. That is well short of the material’s capacity, which is in the region of 35 to 40 % of its own weight, so the colour change gives warning before the bed is exhausted rather than after. At full saturation the indicator can bleach towards white. Because of the cobalt-chloride indicator, this grade should not be placed in direct contact with foodstuffs or pharmaceutical products; a non-indicating or orange-indicating grade is used where that is a concern.

Indicating silica gel in this bead size is loaded into breather units and desiccant dryers on transformers, gearboxes and hydraulic reservoirs, into equipment and shipping containers for corrosion protection during transit and storage, and into instrument and optics enclosures where the state of the desiccant needs to be readable at a glance. The 2 to 5 mm bead range gives a relatively low pressure drop in flow-through breathers compared with fine-mesh grades. Drum packaging suits sites that recharge their own breather units rather than replacing sealed cartridges.
