Supplied under the safan cat6 utp ethernet cable designation, this is a Category 6 unshielded twisted pair installation cable in a 305 m (1000 ft) box — the standard drum length for structured cabling work, cut to length on site as each run is pulled. The cable is rated to 550 MHz, above the 250 MHz baseline associated with Category 6, and uses 23 AWG conductors, the heavier of the two gauges commonly used in Cat 6 horizontal cable. Conductors are copper-clad aluminium rather than solid copper: an aluminium core with a copper outer layer, which lowers cost and weight while carrying high-frequency signal in the copper skin. CCA behaves differently from solid copper on DC resistance, so it is not suited to Power over Ethernet runs at higher power classes and is not a substitute where a solid-copper specification is mandated.
