About the M23053/5-107-4 Heat Shrink Tubing

MIL-DTL-23053/5 covers flexible, crosslinked polyolefin heat-shrinkable insulation sleeving; the part number is built as class digit, size identifier and colour code. In M23053/5-107-4 the leading 1 is Class 1, which the specification defines as flame resistant and which is furnished in colours; size identifier 07 is the 3/8 in size, listed with a minimum as-supplied inside diameter of .375 in (9.53 mm) recovering to a maximum .187 in (4.75 mm), a nominal 2:1 reduction; and colour code 4 is yellow. Recovered wall thickness for this size is .025 ± .003 in. Classes 1 and 2 share a continuous operating temperature range of −55 °C to +135 °C, and the specification sets minimum tensile strength of 1,500 psi, minimum ultimate elongation of 200 % and minimum dielectric strength of 500 V/mil, together with fluid resistance and low-temperature flexibility requirements at −55 °C.

Key specifications

Type Heat-shrinkable electrical insulation sleeving

Class Class 1 — flame resistant
Nominal size 3/8 in
As-supplied ID, minimum .375 in (9.53 mm)
ID after unrestricted shrinkage, maximum .187 in (4.75 mm)
Recovered wall thickness .025 ± .003 in (.635 ± .076 mm)
Continuous operating temperature −55 °C to +135 °C (Classes 1 and 2)
Colour Yellow (colour code 4)
Tensile strength, minimum 1,500 psi (10.3 MPa)
Ultimate elongation, minimum 200 %
Dielectric strength, minimum 500 V/mil (19.7 kV/mm)

Typical applications

Recovering to .187 in, the 3/8 in size covers heavier single conductors, small multi-way connector back-ends and grouped breakouts that the smaller sizes will not pass over. Yellow is a MIL-STD-104 identification colour, so this variant is commonly drawn where a circuit or a bundle has to be told apart at a glance on a densely packed loom, or where a caution or phase convention is applied at a termination. Being Class 1, it is the flame-resistant option, so it suits enclosed harness runs where the clear Class 2 sleeve would not be acceptable.
