About the M83519/2-13 Solder Sleeve, Wire-to-Wire, Soldering
The M83519/2-13 Solder Sleeve soldering equipment reference identifies a wire-to-wire solder sleeve splice built to the M83519 (MIL-DTL-83519) specification series, slash sheet 2, in the dash-13 size. A solder sleeve is a heat-shrinkable sleeve carrying a pre-placed solder ring at its centre and thermoplastic sealing inserts at each end. The conductors to be joined are entered from opposite ends and overlapped beneath the solder ring; applying controlled heat melts the solder to form the electrical joint, recovers the sleeve and melts the sealing inserts, so one heating operation produces a connection that is soldered, insulated and environmentally sealed at the same time. No crimp tooling and no separate insulation step are involved. The dash-13 size accepts an assembled diameter of 0.17 to 0.20 in (approximately 4.3 to 5.1 mm), which is the dimension to check against conductor and insulation build when selecting a size.

Typical applications
Solder sleeves to this series are used for in-line splices in airborne, vehicle and shipboard wiring where the joint has to be sealed against moisture and fluids, and where a crimped splice would be harder to inspect after installation. The dash-13 size covers the mid-range assembled diameters found in signal and light power harnesses. Typical work includes harness repair and modification, breakout and pigtail joints, and rework of looms during scheduled maintenance.
