About the 3M 6520 Fine Line Tape
This is 3M fine line tape supplied under product number 6520 in a 3 mm width, catalogued as 3M 6520 Fine industrial adhesive tape. Fine line tapes are narrow, conformable masking tapes whose job is to define the edge of a painted or coated area, which is a different task from the general masking done with wide paper tape. The narrow width and flexible backing let the tape be laid along a curve or a tight radius without lifting or creasing, and the quality of the tape’s own edge is what determines the sharpness of the resulting paint line. Three millimetres sits at the narrow end of the range: it follows the tightest radius of the family but offers the least bonded area to hold the line, so it is normally used to set the boundary itself and backed with wider masking material behind it. Typical applications
A 3 mm fine line tape is used to lay out narrow stripes, badge outlines and tight curved separations in two-tone finishing, and to mask small features that a wider tape would overrun. On technical refinishing work it holds a defined edge where a repair boundary must be crisp. It is applied first and the remaining area is then covered with masking paper or film worked up to the tape.
