About the Metcal STTC-136 Soldering Cartridge, Chi Soldering

Metcal STTC-136 Cartridge soldering equipment is a soldering tip cartridge from Metcal’s STTC series, with a chisel geometry ground at 30° and a 2.5 mm tip face. In a cartridge system the heating element and the tip are a single replaceable unit rather than a tip slid onto a separate heater, so changing geometry means changing cartridge and the thermal path from element to tip stays short. The chisel form gives a flat working face rather than a point: contact area is larger, which is what carries heat into a joint quickly, and the 30° bend lets the operator present that face to the board while keeping the handpiece at a comfortable angle. At 2.5 mm this is a mid-size chisel — bigger than the fine tips used for dense fine-pitch work, smaller than the broad faces used for heavy ground planes. Series temperature code and handpiece compatibility should be confirmed against Metcal’s own cartridge selector before ordering.

Typical applications

A 2.5 mm chisel is the general-purpose workhorse geometry for through-hole component leads, terminal blocks, connector pins, wire-to-pad and wire-to-terminal joints, and drag-soldering wider-pitch surface-mount packages. The 30° angle suits work where the board is flat on the bench and the operator needs the face square to the pad without rolling the wrist. It is a consumable: cartridges are replaced when the plating is worn or the tip no longer wets, and a spare of the most-used geometry is normally held alongside the station.
