3M 1181 Copper Foil Shielding Tape is an EMI/RFI shielding tape consisting of a dead-soft copper foil backing coated with an electrically conductive pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive. Conductive particles in the adhesive create a low-resistance path between the foil and the substrate, so the tape provides reliable point-to-point electrical contact through the bond line rather than around the tape edge alone. 3M’s product data gives a 0.036 mm (1.4 mil) copper backing and a 0.066 mm (2.6 mil) total tape thickness, with the tape supplied on a removable liner for die-cutting and clean handling. This roll is the 19.1 mm x 16.5 m (3/4 in x 18 yd) size. The tape is UL recognised as flame retardant, and the copper backing resists oxidation and discolouration over time, preserving solderability and contact resistance.

Typical applications
Tape 1181 is applied for EMI/RFI shielding and grounding: sealing seams in shielded enclosures and cable trays, creating ground paths across joints, wrapping cable bundles and terminating shields where a solderable, conformable copper surface is needed. The conductive adhesive lets it establish electrical contact directly through the bonded face, which suits repair and retrofit shielding work on electronic equipment.
