Precision masking tape is used where the edge quality of the paint line, rather than simple coverage, is the point of masking. This 3M 06525 Precision industrial adhesive tape is supplied 6.35 mm wide on a 55 m roll — 6.35 mm being the metric equivalent of a 1/4 in width, the narrowest size normally stocked for line work. A tape this narrow is not intended to mask an area on its own: it is laid to define the boundary and wider masking material or paper is then run against it, so that only the precision tape touches the finished edge. The long 55 m roll matters because a boundary line is continuous and a splice mid-line risks a step in the paint edge. Quote the 06525 part number when replenishing, since narrow tapes vary in backing, conformability and removal behaviour.

Typical applications
Narrow precision tape is used to set two-tone boundaries, stripes, stencil edges and colour separations on painted assemblies, and to mask small features and fasteners that must stay unpainted. Its width also allows it to be curved around a radius more easily than a wide masking tape, which is why it is favoured for detail and refinish work. The 55 m roll supports long uninterrupted boundary runs on larger panels and structures.
