About the M23053/5-106-4 Heat Shrink Tubing

MIL-DTL-23053/5 covers flexible, crosslinked polyolefin heat-shrinkable insulation sleeving; the part number is built as class digit, size identifier and colour code. M23053/5-106-4 decodes as Class 1, size identifier 06, colour code 4. Class 1 is the flame-resistant class and is furnished in colours, with the specification requiring it to be self-extinguishing within one minute with no more than 25 % of the indicator flag burned or charred. Size 06 is the 1/4 in size, with a minimum as-supplied inside diameter of .250 in (6.35 mm) recovering to a maximum .125 in (3.18 mm), and a recovered wall thickness of .025 ± .003 in. Colour code 4 is yellow. Continuous operating range is −55 °C to +135 °C, with a maximum specific gravity of 1.35 for Class 1 material and maximum water absorption of 0.5 %.

Typical applications

Recovering to .125 in, the 1/4 in size is the everyday harness size: it closes down over butt splices, ring and lug terminations and small conductor groups without needing an oversized start diameter. In yellow it is generally used as a coded sleeve — marking a particular circuit, warning of a live or test point, or separating one loom from another where several run side by side. Because Class 1 is self-extinguishing, this variant is the one specified for enclosed bays and equipment racks where flame behaviour is controlled.
