About the Araldite AW/HW 4858 Adhesive, 50 mL
Araldite AW 4858 resin with Hardener HW 4858 is a two-component, room-temperature curing epoxy adhesive paste formulated for high strength and toughness. The mixed adhesive is black and thixotropic, with a density of about 1.1 g/cm³, so it holds position on vertical and overhead joints. Cured lap shear strength is greater than 28 MPa and the system is characterised by high peel strength as well, which is why it is specified for bonding composites including large carbon fibre reinforced polymer parts as well as metals and thermoplastics. Pot life is approximately 150 minutes and parts should be assembled within 60 minutes of application. Greatest lap shear strength is normally obtained with a glue line of 0.05 to 0.10 mm; the paste contains spacer particles that guarantee a minimum bond line of 0.05 mm. Properties can be developed further by post-curing at elevated temperature. As the araldite aw/hw 4858 – 50 ml presentation, it is supplied in a side-by-side cartridge with a static mixing nozzle. Shelf life is five years from date of manufacture.

Typical applications
The long 150-minute pot life combined with a thixotropic, non-slumping paste makes this system suited to larger bonded assemblies where several joints are laid up before fixturing, particularly composite panel and CFRP structure bonding. The built-in 0.05 mm spacers give a repeatable bond line without shims, which is useful on metal-to-composite joints where clamping pressure would otherwise starve the joint. The 50 ml cartridge presentation with a static mixer suits repair, prototype and small-batch work where hand weighing of resin and hardener is undesirable.
