About the Loctite 638 50 mL
LOCTITE 638 is a single-component anaerobic retaining compound that cures in the absence of air when confined between close-fitting metal surfaces. It is formulated for the bonding of cylindrical fitting parts — bearings onto shafts, bushes into housings, gears, pulleys and cylindrical keyed assemblies — where the joint clearance is larger than a light press fit and maximum room-temperature strength is required. The product is a green liquid supplied in a 50 ml bottle, and it accommodates diametral clearances up to 0.25 mm. Fixture time on steel is approximately four minutes, with full cure reached after 24 hours. The chemistry tolerates minor surface contamination, including light industrial oils, so parts do not always require solvent degreasing before assembly. Because the cured compound fills the full annular gap, it also distributes load across the joint rather than concentrating it at contact points.
