Description

PNI RM3100 Triaxial Geomagnetic Sensor Module, SPI Interface — BOLTON SKU 59192.

About the PNI RM3100 Triaxial Geomagnetic Sensor M Technical

The RM3100 is a three-axis geomagnetic sensor module built by PNI Sensor around the company’s magneto-inductive sensing method rather than Hall-effect or magneto-resistive elements. PNI publishes a full-scale measurement range of ±1100 µT with 13 nT resolution and 15 nT noise, a noise floor of 4 pT/√Hz at 1 Hz, and linearity of 0.50% over ±200 µT. Current draw is quoted at 260 µA for all three axes sampling at 8 Hz, and the operating temperature range is −40 °C to +85 °C. The module supports both SPI and I²C host interfaces; this PNI RM3100 Triaxial technical component is specified for SPI. Because the measurement is derived from a frequency shift rather than an analogue bridge output, PNI characterises the device as having no bias drift over temperature and time.

Key specifications

Manufacturer PNI Sensor
Device type Three-axis geomagnetic sensor (magnetometer) module
Sensing method Magneto-inductive
Host interface SPI (the module also supports I²C)
Measurement range ±1100 µT
Resolution 13 nT
Noise 15 nT; noise floor 4 pT/√Hz at 1 Hz
Linearity 0.50% over ±200 µT
Supply current 260 µA (three axes at 8 Hz)
Operating temperature −40 °C to +85 °C

Typical applications

A tri-axial magnetometer at this resolution is used for heading determination and compassing on unmanned air and ground platforms, as an input to attitude and heading reference computation, and for magnetic anomaly and geophysical survey work where small field changes must be resolved against the earth’s background field. The low 260 µA three-axis current draw suits continuously powered, battery-fed payloads, and the SPI interface specified here suits direct connection to a flight controller or embedded processor without an intermediate bus bridge.
