About the M85049/69-17W Backshell
M85049 is the connector accessories specification for MIL-DTL-38999, and slash sheet /69 covers the shrink boot adapter: a backshell that screws onto the rear of the connector and ends in a stepped, ridged profile made to accept a heat-shrinkable moulded boot. Recovering the boot over that profile seals the transition from connector to cable bundle and gives strain relief where a harness is most vulnerable. In this part number 17 is the connector shell size and W is the material and finish code — aluminium with an olive drab cadmium finish. The published dimensional chart gives shell size 17 an M25 × 1-6H class 2B coupling thread, a 1.107 in (28.1 mm) maximum body diameter, 0.710 in maximum length and a minimum cable clearance of 0.750 in (19.1 mm), which is the figure to size a bundle against. Typical applications
Shrink boot adapters are fitted during harness manufacture and repair wherever a circular MIL-spec connector meets a cable bundle that must be sealed against moisture, fluids and abrasion — airframe and avionics looms, UAV and ground vehicle harnessing, ground support equipment and deployable shelter wiring. The moulded shrink boot itself, and any adhesive lining, are ordered separately and chosen against the recovered bundle diameter and the adapter’s cable clearance.
