Description
METCAL STTC-817 SOLDERING CARTRIDGE FOR CERAMIC AND HIGH THERMAL DEMAND APPLICATIONS LARGE CHISEL 5.0MM TIP SIZE 7.6MM T — BOLTON SKU 50789.
About the STTC-817 Soldering Equipment
The METCAL STTC-817 sits in the 800 series of the STTC cartridge range, the highest of the three STTC temperature classes at a nominal 450 °C — the class Metcal recommends where the joint pulls heat away faster than a standard cartridge can replace it, such as ceramic substrates and other high thermal demand work. Its working face is a large chisel measuring 5.0 mm across with a 7.6 mm tip length: a short, heavy geometry that puts a broad contact area and a large thermal mass directly against the joint, trading fine access for heat delivery. Because the heater is integral to the cartridge, changing to an STTC-817 changes both the temperature class and the tip shape in one part. Distributor listings give the cartridge for the MX-500, MX-5000 and MX-5200 systems, used with the MX-RM3E or MX-H1-AV hand-piece.

Typical applications
A 5.0 mm chisel in the 450 °C class is the tool reached for on ground planes and copper pours, coaxial and shield terminations, heavy power connectors and busbar-style joints, where a fine tip would simply stall. In avionics and UAV electronics shops it is typically kept alongside finer cartridges so one bench can move between chassis-level terminations and board-level work. It also suits ceramic-substrate assemblies, where the substrate itself acts as a heat sink.
