About the Memotronics Solder Wick 1.5m Desolder Wire
Desoldering wick is a fine braided copper strip carrying flux, used to lift solder off a joint. The braid is laid over the solder to be removed and a hot iron tip pressed onto it; once the assembly reaches the solder’s melting point the flux activates and the molten solder is drawn up into the braid by capillary action along the braided strands. Copper conducts heat well and wets readily to molten solder, so the removal is confined to the area under the braid rather than reheating the whole board. This item is a 1.5 m (approximately 5 ft) length of 2 mm wide braid supplied with flux. Manufacturers of desoldering braid note that rosin-fluxed wick wicks quickly but leaves a residue that should be cleaned off afterwards; the flux type on any given roll should be confirmed at quotation.

Typical applications
Desoldering braid is a standard consumable for electronics rework and repair: lifting components from through-hole and surface-mount pads, clearing plated-through holes, dressing bridged joints on fine-pitch devices and cleaning pads before a replacement part is fitted. It is used on avionics and instrument repair benches, harness and connector shops and field repair kits. Where rework is performed to a controlled workmanship standard, that standard governs flux type and post-rework cleaning.
