Description
LOCK WIIRE DIAM 0.4MM STAINLESS STEEL — BOLTON SKU 69186.
About the 108-0400 Lock Wire, 0.4mm Stainless Steel
Safety lock wire is a fine stainless steel wire used to mechanically secure fasteners and fittings against loosening. The wire is threaded through drilled fastener heads or lugs and twisted so that any tendency of the fastener to back off is resisted by tension in the wire, which is why the technique remains standard practice on assemblies subject to sustained vibration. Part 108-0400 is the 0.40 mm diameter grade in the Nexus range, supplied on a 25 g roll; the range also includes a 0.71 mm diameter for heavier work. The finer 0.40 mm size is intended for small fittings — fuel and air line connections and similar threaded couplings — where a heavier wire would not pass through the drilling. Correct practice requires the twist direction to pull the fastener in the tightening sense.

Typical applications
Lock wire is used across aerospace and motorsport assembly and maintenance for securing bolts, unions, fuel and air fittings, and inspection panels on assemblies exposed to vibration. Workshops hold it as a consumable alongside lock-wire pliers and drilled-head fasteners. On aircraft and airborne systems, the applicable maintenance manual or engineering instruction governs wire size and twist practice for each joint.
