Glenair’s 859-015 is a small sleeve that is dropped into the wire barrel of an AS39029-type crimp contact before crimping, so that a contact sized for heavier wire can be terminated onto a thinner conductor. In this part number the Z2 is the gold-plated finish, the first size digit 16 is the contact wire barrel the bushing fits, and 24 is the wire size it then accommodates. Without a bushing a size 16 contact takes 16 to 20 AWG; with this bushing it takes 24 AWG. The body is copper alloy per AS39029, gold plated to ASTM B488 Type II Code C, 0.000050 in minimum, over nickel to AMS-QQ-N-290 Class 2. Operating temperature is −55 °C to +200 °C. Typical applications
The 859-015Z2-16-24 bushing wire barrel reducer is ordered when a harness design fixes the contact size — because the connector insert arrangement is already set — but a particular circuit only carries a 24 AWG conductor. Rather than accept a loose crimp, the bushing brings the barrel bore down to suit. Glenair’s own guidance is that the bushing must be fitted into the contact before crimping, that the crimp selector setting for the unbushed barrel wire size is retained, and that a shrink sleeve or potting may be needed for proper environmental sealing at the grommet.
