About the M23053/5-204-C Heat Shrink Tubing

M23053/5-204-C is heat-shrinkable polyolefin sleeving ordered against MIL-DTL-23053/5, reissued as SAE-AMS-DTL-23053/5. The class digit 2 identifies Class 2, which the specification furnishes in clear only and classifies as flammable: a note on the sheet states that Class 2 sleevings have not been flame retarded, will burn readily, and are not to be acquired where flame resistance is required. The size identifier 04 selects a minimum as-supplied inside diameter of 0.125 in (3.18 mm), recovering to 0.062 in (1.58 mm) maximum, with a wall after recovery of 0.020 ± 0.003 in (0.508 ± 0.076 mm) and longitudinal change within ±5 percent. Class 2 shares the -55 °C to +135 °C continuous operating range of Class 1 and must additionally pass a clarity-stability test of 24 hours at 175 °C, so the sleeve stays see-through in service.

Typical applications

Clear sleeving at 0.125 in recovering to about 0.062 in is the size that goes over single small-gauge conductors, solder sleeves and individual crimped terminations. Transparency is the reason to pick it: the joint, or a printed wire marker underneath it, stays readable after shrinking, which suits inspection-heavy build and repair work. Because this Class 2 material is not flame retarded, a Class 1 or Class 3 part should be substituted wherever the installation standard calls for flame resistance.
