The wire is threaded through a hole drilled in a fastener head or component, twisted along its length, then anchored to a second fastener or fixed point and twisted off, so that any attempt by the fastener to back off is resisted directly by the wire in tension. Goodridge lockwire is drawn from aircraft-grade 321 stainless steel, a titanium-stabilised austenitic grade chosen for its corrosion resistance and its resistance to sensitisation at elevated temperature. This item is the 0.8 mm diameter, one of several gauges in the range; heavier gauges give a stronger restraint while finer gauges are easier to route through small drillings and to twist neatly. Safety wire is specified where vibration, thermal cycling or safety-critical function makes a self-loosening fastener unacceptable.

Typical applications
